Just like the flower grows from a bud and blossoms, fighting against all the
odds that it faces in the form of heat, cold and the wind, our organization,
Students of Sai (SOS), has gone through all these stages, surviving all the
odds that it faced from time to time. From a mere thought to a complete
reality, it has grown from strength to strength into this worldwide
network of old students. If it were not for the idea (the bud),
there wouldn’t have been SOS (the flower) at all.
The idea was lingering in the hearts of every old student that
attended the numerous farewell ceremonies and school days. This
idea remained latent for a while and did not kickoff immediately
since we were all too young and naïve to realize what we could do.
Again, like the flower that just cannot stop blossoming when it
is time in the right season, the idea began to materialize. Some
of us got together and started to collect the addresses of all
available alumni, without any clue to what would happen next and
how big all this would turn into. We requested our Principal for
permission and she welcomed the idea wholeheartedly and gave us
all the help we needed.
We decided to arrange a meeting for all the old students. We got
in touch with the school captains of successive batches and
instructed them to make sure all their friends attended the meet.
The only goal we had was that we should all meet and the only hope
was that some positive outcome would emerge from the meeting. God
works His ways in His own special way and to everyone’s surprise,
we got more than a hundred old students for our first meet but all
that we had were two packs of Marie biscuits and that’s what we all
shared. We all gathered in the circular verandah of our school. The
function was formal, attended by principal madam and a few teachers.
Madam spoke about her vision of such an association and then, after
formal introductions of all the students, she declared the association
as the Sathya Sai Vidhya Vihar Old Students Association.
We then discussed our next task. Suddenly, so many things were happening and
it was a completely novel experience for all of us. We never even
thought about the need to be more organized and systematic since we
never expected the response to be as overwhelming as it was. By accident
of fate or purpose, the bud seemed to have formed by now.
That day ---- was really the day the bud started to show up.
But hold on, the best was yet to come
